Spring is right around the corner, and we have a fresh new wine for you! Nero d’Avola reigns supreme in Sicily, being the island’s most widely produced red wine. Originating from the town of Avola in southeast Sicily, Nero d’Avola translates as “black of Avola”, noting the grape’s dark color. It is believed that the ancient Greeks were the first to cultivate this varietal in Sicily over 2,000 years ago. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that Nero d’Avola was produced and exported regularly as a single varietal. During that time, vines were imported to California, which is where we source these grapes from. Over the past few years, we have been lucky enough to work with this varietal, and each vintage seems better than the last!
Aromas are dark plum, and subtly creamy, giving it a rich approach. The palate is tasty with flavors of spiced plum and blueberry. Its medium body and dry finish make this wine easily approachable and inviting; perfect as we transition from snow to sunshine! This time of the year is also peak citrus season, with some of the best oranges and lemons harvested in March. We recommend a citrus, braised or oven roasted, chicken would pair nicely with this month’s Nero d’Avola!
Cheers!
