May 2021 | 2019 American Carignan

While the month of May can be pretty up and down when it comes to the weather, we don’t think it’s presumptuous to say that it’s appropriate to roll out the grills and start cooking outside. That’s why we chose this delicious new 2019 Carignan as May’s wine of the month.

This 2019 Carignan is made from the same old vine grapes – grown by Cooper Vineyards in Amador County, California – as the 2018 vintage. Except in 2019, the crop came in much riper than the previous year. As a result, we see a bigger more robust, rich showing of the varietal making it the perfect grilling companion. Here at the Balistreri house we find a wine like this is delicious paired with slow roasted lamb on the rotisserie.

2019 American Carignan

This Carignan was aged in neutral American oak barrels. Fresh out of the bottle it shows tart plum and raspberry on the nose. As it opens up the fruit moves more towards a dried or candied fruit with a touch of baking spice. The mouthfeel is very juicy and bursting with cranberry and berry pie flavors. It has a good tannin structure that balances the fruit and riper qualities of the wine beautifully. We personally enjoy these riper styles of wine when they are younger (between 1 and 5 years of age) as they really highlight the bursting fruit flavors and lovely smooth tannin structure. A perfect wine to pair with a variety of foods, we hope you enjoy!
