September 2008 Wine of the Month
2006 Colorado Merlot Late Harvest $26
(Bennett's Vineyard)

A super huge Merlot!  It is not often that one comes across a unique wine like this. It is labeled with a Late Harvest designation because it has some “Port like” characteristics and, it truly was harvested very late for a Merlot. The sugar level came in at a whopping 32Brix.  We must have some super natural yeast hanging out at Balistreri’s because the “wild” yeast did a great job converting all  that sugar into alcohol.  The yeast survived to 18% alcohol and stopped leaving about 1%  residual  sugar.
Those sweet, ripe and a bit dehydrated grapes,  plus hanging out in American Oak for 24 months, contribute to the incredible rich body and flavors of this Merlot. Expect to find intense aromas and flavors of dried cherries, plums, raisins, toasted nuts, and sweet anise. The slightly sweet fruit flavors are then balanced by big powerful tannins.

2006 Colorado Cabernet Franc$28

(Talbotts Vineyard)

A new release, this 2006 Cabernet Franc was made with grapes grown by Talbott Farms located on the East Orchard Mesa, Palisade Colorado. This Franc is one of three different single vineyard  Cabernet Francs produced by John Balistreri in 2006. It’s an extremely young wine that can be cellared for many years to come. Although it is quite young, it can still be enjoyed now by decanting. Allowing a good half hour for it to breath, will really open up the intricate flavors and mellow the somewhat harsh tannins. As you swirl this wine in your glass you can see the deep garnet color while it releases mouth watering aromas of sweet spice. The flavors range from tart plum and blue berry to garden herbs and savory spices. Then, the leathery tannins linger on the finish. Enjoy now while it unfolds in your glass or lay it down for a year or two for a special treat.

July 2008 Wine of the Month
2006 Colorado Sangiovese $22

An enjoyable light bodied red that’s just perfect for warm weather. We suggest cooling it down to cellar temperature (55-60 degrees) for optimum enjoyment. This food friendly wine can be paired with most anything, grilled fish, chicken, meats and all sorts of different pasta dishes. It is bright and lively, with delicate fruit flavors finishing with light crisp tannins. A great summer red!

June 2008 Wine of the Month
2005 Colorado Syrah $24
(Talbotts Vineyard)

A new Balistreri Syrah produced with grapes from Talbott Vineyard up on the Orchard Mesa in Palisade Colorado.
Just in time for summer barbeques, its another spicy one. You will find fresh spicy aromas that lead you into the layers of intricate flavors.
Look for black pepper, cherry, cinnamon, coffee, and a bright oak finish. Enjoy!

May 2008 Wine of the Month
2006 Colorado Cabernet Sauvignon $30
(Hovde Vineyard)

A new release of Colorado Cabernet Sauvignon, grown by Doug Hovde up on the Orchard Mesa in Palisade, Colorado.
It’s not always easy to grow quality wine grapes here in Colorado so we feel very privileged to get these cabs from the Hovde Vineyard.
We take the entire crop and it’s proving to be an excellent vineyard. Unfortunately, we missed the 2005 Hovde Cab
because the entire crop was lost due to winter damage on the vines. So we are very excited to present this new 2006 vintage.
It  has hints of lavender and fresh black cherry on the nose with blackberry, currant, and nutty flavors.  The finish is brisk with slightly puckery tannins.
It has great ageing potential and those tannins will mellow gracefully each year if you’re interested in cellaring this wine.
Though, we are very pleased with how it is drinking now, Enjoy!
